About the Artist
Paul Penny

Paul Penny grew up on a farm in Clayton, NC. With a very understanding mother, and a carpenter/farmer/ inventor dad, Paul was constantly playing in the workshop, the streams and the fields, trying to harness the water, wind and sun. He dammed streams. He built solar stills and ovens. He built kites and windmills. His dad could fix anything, and from a very early age Paul watched (and "helped"). All the while, Paul's mom supported this "craziness". Paul became an avid bicyclist and ultimately a professional bicycle mechanic where he further developed his mechanical skills and thirst for inventing.

Later Paul directed his creative energies toward computers and became a very good software developer and systems architect. Then he figured people and organizations were even more interesting than technology and became a noted consultant and lecturer in business strategy, business process improvement and knowledge management. He continues to focus his professional energies in these areas today, as Director of Solutions Consulting for Strategic Technologies, Inc., an Information Technology integration and consulting firm in Cary, NC.

A popular guest lecturer and panelist, Paul has addressed audiences at NC State University, the University of Tennessee’s Stokely School of Business, Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, the Society for Competitive Intelligence, and the North Carolina Quality Conference, among others. Paul’s lectures typically address business and technology strategy, knowledge and innovation management, and the role of information technology and the Internet in redefining businesses.

Paul has been an admirer of kinetic sculpture for at least 20 years. He still remembers the first time he saw a David Roy sculpture on display in Alexandria, Virginia and watched in awe for almost an hour. The movie "Twister" piqued his interest in wind sculptures. He decided he wanted one or more for his yard, and began researching designs. Influenced by the works of Lyman Whitaker, Roger Heitzman and other artists, Paul adapted on a basic concept of these works and built his first wind sculpture at the age of 36 - at least 20 years after his last attempt at art. Further influenced by the works of George Rickey, Anthony Howe, Tom Brewitz, Starr Kempf and David Roy, Paul has designed more complex geometric sculptures such as the AeroMobius and Pillar of Fire that seem to defy aerodynamics. Paul's working toward the goal of focusing all his professional energy on sculpture.

Paul is a graduate of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and studied Engineering and Business Management at North Carolina State University. Paul is a member of Mensa.

Paul lives in Holly Springs, North Carolina with wife Roberta and their sons, Josh and Jack. When not working and building wind sculptures, Paul enjoys movies, travel, and the miracle of watching his boys grow up to be very interesting human beings.
